NO JOB? STOP COMPLAINING! VENTURE INTO SNAIL FARMING

The all time high rate of unemployment in Nigeria today is a great cause for concern. Instead of been bent on looking for a job, why don’t you look inwards. Could you venture into snail farming? Gladly, snails are in high demand and very costly too. For this reason, there is a high profit potential. In other words, it is a very lucrative business you can start right away.

I have a friend that is into this business on a part-time basis. Recently, he sold 40 snails at the rate of 100naira per snail. In fact, this is the cheapest, because a mature snail goes for 200 to 250naira.

SET UP COST
Obviously, constructing a snail house is cheap. Also, the maintenance level is low. You don’t have to spend so much on their feeding since you can easily get feeds around the house. The best part is that you can do it at your own convenience.

FACTS ABOUT SNAILS
1.      The specie Achatina-Achatina lays up to 300 to 500 eggs at a time in clutches, three times a year.
2.      Snail farming environment: snails are easily dehydrated, and wind increase the rate of moisture loss in snail. To prevent snails from losing water so quickly, the snail house must be located in an environment that is protected from wind.
3.      Appropriate soil type: sandy-loamy soil with low water holding capacity.
4.      Snails love dark and cold places.
5.      Place wire around the snail house: The wire is useful in keeping away rat and snakes or other predators from eating the snails in the farm. Also, protect the snail house from ants and termites.
6.      Snail is high in protein(12-16%) and irons(45-50mg/kg), low in fat and contains almost all the amino acids needed by humans.

GETTING SNAILS FOR A START
It is advisable to get snails directly from the forest instead of buying from the market after they have been exposed to sunlight and dehydrated.

SNAIL FOODS
Snails especially Achatina feed on green leaves and fruits, cocoyam leaves, pawpaw leaves, okra leaves, cassava leaves, eggplant leaves, cabbage, mango, banana, tomatoes, oil palm fruits, pears, cucumber, etc.
